Google AI Mode: What It Is and How to Optimize Your Content for It

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search. Instead of a list of ten blue links, you ask a complex question, follow up in the same thread and get a synthesized answer with links to supporting pages. It works by splitting your question into sub-queries, a technique Google calls query fan-out.
For SEO, the unit of competition changes. You no longer compete only for one keyword. You compete to be the best source for one piece of the reasoning behind an answer.
TL;DR
- AI Mode uses query fan-out: one question becomes many parallel searches, and the answer is assembled from the best sources for each part.
- Google says AI features follow the same fundamentals as classic Search: indexed, snippet-eligible, helpful pages. There is no special markup to "turn on".
- Win by covering the next questions a user would ask, not just the first one, and by making every section quotable on its own.
- Topic clusters beat isolated posts, because AI Mode rewards depth and exploration.
- You cannot guarantee a citation, so measure presence in AI answers instead of promising it.
- To measure, Search Console has had a "Generative AI performance" report since August 31, 2026, with impressions in AI Mode and AI Overviews by page, country, device and date.
How to read this: if you are starting out, read how people search in AI first and then the section on preparing your content. If you already work in SEO, jump to query fan-out, clusters and measurement, then move on to how AI searches for information: RAG and grounding.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a Google Search experience powered by Gemini that handles longer, multi-part questions in a back-and-forth conversation. It returns a written answer with links to sources, and lets users keep refining without starting a new search. Google introduced it in 2025 and has expanded it since; availability depends on your country and language, so check Google's current rollout.
It sits alongside Google AI Overviews, the summaries that appear at the top of a regular results page. AI Overviews answer within the normal search. AI Mode is a dedicated, conversational space where the answer is the main event.
In plain language: if an AI Overview is a summary at the top of the page, AI Mode is a conversation with a researcher who reads several sites while you ask. If your page answers one part of that conversation well, it has a chance of being one of the cited sources.
How does query fan-out work?
Query fan-out is the process by which Google breaks a question into related sub-questions and runs many searches at once, then combines the results into one response. Google described this approach on its blog when it updated AI Mode. The practical effect is that a single, broad question can pull in pages that match very specific facets.
Take this question: "Which tool should I use to create content that shows up in AI Overviews?" A fan-out system might search for:
- What are AI Overviews and how are sources chosen?
- How does content get cited in AI answers?
- Which tools support answer engine optimization (AEO)?
- How should content use structured data?
- How do you measure visibility in AI search?
A page can be cited because it answers one of those sub-questions extremely well, even if it is not the broadest page on the topic. We explain the mechanism in more depth in query fan-out: why one question becomes many searches.
For those who already work in SEO: Google describes fan-out as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and its guide to optimizing for generative AI features (updated July 2026) gives the example of a lawn-weeds question that spawns parallel searches about herbicides and natural removal. The same guide says there is no need to break content into tiny pieces: its systems can identify the relevant part of a page covering several topics. For your site, that means one main intent per URL and H2s that resolve sub-questions, not satellite pages for every variation.
Does AI Mode change SEO fundamentals?
Not the fundamentals, but the weighting. Google's documentation on AI features and your website says that to appear in these features a page needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and that no additional technical requirements apply. Good SEO hygiene remains the entry ticket, and you do not need an llms.txt file either (what is known in 2026).
What changes is how you are discovered and chosen:
| Classic search | AI Mode |
|---|---|
| One query, ranked list | One question, many sub-queries |
| You win a keyword | You win a facet of the answer |
| Click is the main outcome | Citation and brand mention matter too |
| Post-by-post thinking | Cluster-level thinking |
| Short keyword phrases | Long, conversational prompts |
How do you prepare your content for AI Mode?
Write as if the reader will ask three more questions after this one. Our practical approach is a coverage test with three layers:
- The answer layer. Does the page answer the primary question in the first 40 to 60 words?
- The adjacent layer. Does it address the sub-questions a fan-out would generate: definitions, comparisons, criteria, costs, risks?
- The next-step layer. Does it anticipate what the user asks next, such as "how do I do this" or "what can go wrong"?
If a layer is missing, you have found your next section, or your next article. This is the logic behind the brief in Contentor: it takes a keyword and builds an answer plan with intent, related questions, entities, H2/H3 structure, sources and internal links, so gaps show up before you write a word.
A strong AI Mode-friendly page usually includes:
- a direct answer at the top;
- question-style headings that match real phrasing;
- a short context section for newcomers;
- decision criteria and a comparison table where relevant;
- a step-by-step process;
- real examples and honest limitations;
- an FAQ with concise answers.
This also helps people. Pages that are easy for a model to decompose are usually easier for a reader to scan. For the passage-level version of this structure, see how to structure content that LLMs can cite.
Why do topic clusters matter more than single posts?
AI Mode encourages exploration. A user can go from a broad question to a very specific doubt in seconds, and the system is searching across your site's related pages while it does. If you only have one isolated post, there is nothing for the second and third questions to land on.
A connected cluster on this theme looks like this:
- SEO for AI search, the overview
- Answer engine optimization (AEO)
- Generative engine optimization (GEO)
- Google AI Overviews
- Entities and semantic SEO
- Schema markup for AI search
- Query fan-out
The value is in the network: each article reinforces the others through descriptive internal links, and together they signal that your site covers the subject, not just a keyword. If you have never built a cluster, follow the guide to topic clusters, and for the AI-assisted process, how to build a content cluster with AI without losing quality.
How important is your brand in conversational search?
More than before. People often ask AI Mode for recommendations ("what's the best tool for X"), and the system has to decide which brands and sources to mention. That favors entities that are described consistently across the web: what you are, who you serve and what you do.
Make that description unambiguous on your own pages. For example, "Contentor is an AI Search SEO platform that helps teams plan, write and optimize content for Google and AI answers" gives a model a category, an audience and a task in one sentence. A vague line like "we improve your SEO with AI" gives it nothing to match to a question. For SaaS and B2B brands, this is also what gets you into "best tools" lists; see GEO for SaaS and B2B.
How do you measure AI Mode performance?
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI features in Search Console's Web search type, so there is no AI Mode filter in the Performance report. Since August 31, 2026, though, the Generative AI performance report shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. The documentation does not describe a split by feature, the report has no clicks or queries, and recent data can be preliminary. Combine signals:
- Search Console: the Generative AI performance report for exposure per page, and the Performance report for long, conversational queries, rising impressions without proportional clicks, and pages gaining visibility through sub-topics.
- Brand mentions in AI answers: check whether your brand and pages appear for your target questions, following how to know if ChatGPT and Gemini recommend your brand. For mention rate and share of voice, see how to measure AI visibility.
- Referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics.
Contentor's Results page brings Search Console performance into one place, and AI Visibility tracks the questions you care about and records whether your brand shows up in AI answers. Not every exposure produces an immediate click. Part of the value is becoming a reference before the click.
What should you avoid?
- Thin pages for keyword variations. Context matters more in conversational search, so shallow near-duplicates lose strength and can run into spam policies.
- Promises you cannot keep. Nobody can guarantee a citation in AI Mode. Sell and plan for process, structure and continuous improvement.
- Hiding content. Text that is not visible in the rendered page is hard for any system to use.
- Blocking crawlers by accident. Check robots.txt, noindex tags and canonicals before blaming the content.
- Writing for the model instead of the reader. Clarity and usefulness are what get a passage quoted.

FAQ
What is the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of a regular Google results page. AI Mode is a separate conversational interface where you ask longer questions, follow up and read a synthesized answer with links. Both are driven by Gemini, but AI Mode is built for exploration and multi-step queries.
Do I need special markup to appear in AI Mode?
No. Google's documentation says no extra technical requirements apply beyond standard Search eligibility: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Structured data that matches visible content still helps machines understand the page, but it is not a switch that unlocks AI Mode. Note that FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google on May 7, 2026, so FAQPage markup no longer earns a visual boost, although a visible FAQ remains useful.
What is query fan-out in simple terms?
It is how AI Mode turns one question into many. The system breaks the request into sub-topics, searches for each one at the same time and combines the best results into a single answer. That is why a page can be cited for answering one sub-question precisely, even if it is not the broadest page on the topic.
Can I track clicks from AI Mode in Search Console?
AI feature clicks and impressions are included in the standard Web search type, so there is no separate AI Mode filter in the Performance report. The Generative AI performance report (available since August 31, 2026) adds impressions for AI Mode and AI Overviews by page, but no clicks. You can still spot the pattern through conversational queries, shifting CTR and pages that gain impressions through sub-topics, and complement it with a tool that monitors AI answers directly.
How do I know if my brand appears in AI answers?
Ask the questions your customers ask, in the AI tools they use, and note whether your brand or pages are mentioned and linked. Doing this manually is slow and inconsistent. An AI visibility monitor runs the questions on a schedule and keeps the history, so you can see trends.
Does AI Mode make traditional SEO obsolete?
No. Indexing, helpful content, authority and internal links are still the base that AI features build on. What changes is the emphasis: clearer answers, deeper topic coverage and a well-defined brand matter more, and success is measured by citations and visibility as well as rankings.
