SaaS and B2B Backlinks: A Strategy Beyond Guest Posts

SaaS and B2B companies earn backlinks when they create something other people need to cite: integration pages on partner sites, data only the product has, free tools and templates, fair comparisons and customer stories. Guest posts are still useful, but they are only one channel. Links should reach the pages that sell, directly or indirectly.

Quick summary

  • Guest posts alone are not enough for SaaS: the audience is narrow, the buying cycle is long and generic marketing blogs do not speak to the buyer.
  • The strongest sources sit around the product: integrations, partners, original data, free tools, documentation and customers.
  • Pricing pages rarely receive links. Point links at guides, tools and comparisons, and let internal links carry the authority to product, solutions and pricing pages.
  • Beware of "powered by" footer links, link swaps between partners and weak directories: Google lists all of them as link spam.
  • Measure with B2B signals: sign-ups, demo requests and trials, not just traffic.

How to read this post

If you are a founder or marketing manager and SEO is not your day job, read the sections on link sources and the step-by-step for a linkable asset. If you already work in SEO, go straight to the target pages, the contract and widget risks, and the six-month plan example.

Why aren't guest posts enough for SaaS?

Because software buyers rarely read generic marketing blogs, and links from sites unrelated to your market tell Google and readers very little. SaaS needs links from places where your buyer already is: industry communities, technology partners and specialized publications.

Guest posting works when the site publishes for your audience and you have something to say. To do it well, see how to run guest post outreach. The mistake is depending on it: without assets of your own, you will be asking for a favor with every link.

In plain English: a guest post is like writing a column in a neighborhood newspaper. It helps, but if your customer lives in another city, the right paper is a different one. In SaaS, the "right paper" is usually the website of a partner, a community or an event in your market.

The best sources come from the product itself and from the partner network. They have natural relevance and rarely look bought. The table compares the main ones.

For SEO professionals: links from app marketplaces and software review sites are often nofollow or sponsored. That does not make them useless: they bring qualified traffic, brand mentions and discovery. Record the attribute in your tracking spreadsheet and measure referral traffic separately, as the guide to measuring backlink ROI shows.

To find where competitors have links you do not, use the link gap.

External links should reach pages that deserve to be cited, not necessarily the pages that sell. Pricing and sign-up pages almost never earn links on their own. The path is to link the asset and use internal links to carry the authority to conversion.

Comparisons and alternativesYes, if they are fairCapture commercial searches
Tools, templates and researchYes, the main targetLinkable assets
DocumentationYes, from developersTechnical authority
PricingRarelyReceive authority through internal links

The internal linking guide explains how to move that authority, and the post on linkable assets shows how to turn a tool into a source of links.

Google says it uses links as a relevance signal and to discover pages, and that, in general, it can only crawl links in <a> elements with an href attribute, as its documentation on link best practices states. Ask partners to point to real, accessible URLs, and check that the links on your own site use <a href>, not just JavaScript events.

A linkable asset is content or a tool that someone cites because they need it to prove a point or finish a task. The steps below work for research, a tool or a template.

  1. List the questions the market keeps repeating. Use support, sales and communities. A frequent question is demand.
  2. Choose what only you have. Aggregated product data, a customer survey or a methodology of your own. The guide to original research and proprietary data shows how.
  3. Define the usage format. A calculator, a copyable template or a report with 3 quotable charts. The easier to cite, the better.
  4. Publish the methodology. Data source, period, sample size and limits. Without it, journalists and analysts cannot cite you.
  5. Create a stable page. A short, permanent URL; do not change the address with each version.
  6. Do targeted outreach. Look for people who already cited data similar to your topic. The link gap shows who they are.
  7. Track and update. Record the links you earn and refresh the data every year to keep the page relevant.

In plain English: think of the bibliography of a school paper. Whoever writes the best reference material in the field is the book everybody cites. The backlink is that citation.

When using customer data, anonymize and aggregate it, and ask legal counsel to confirm compliance with the privacy rules that apply to you (such as GDPR in Europe or LGPD in Brazil) before publishing.

The most SaaS-specific risk is link distribution at scale: "powered by" badges, widgets and contract clauses that require customers to link. Google lists these patterns as link spam in its spam policies.

  • Links in distributed footers and templates. A "built with X" link on every page of thousands of customer sites looks artificial.
  • Widgets with keyword-rich links. The widget can stay, but the link should be a branded, qualified one.
  • Mandatory link clauses. The policy mentions requiring a link in terms of use or a contract without letting the content owner qualify it. Give the customer the option of marking the link nofollow or sponsored.
  • Excessive link swapping. "Partners" pages created only to swap links between companies fall into the same category.
  • Weak directories. The same policy lists links from low-quality directories and bookmark sites. Prefer software directories with real curation and reviews.

For SEO professionals: if a "powered by" badge is part of the business model, ship it with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" by default and point it to a brand URL. The value is in traffic and discovery, not in the ranking signal. The page on dofollow, nofollow, sponsored and ugc details each attribute.

Links and mentions on trusted sources help a SaaS be found and remembered, including by AI assistants, but no one knows exactly how these systems choose their sources. What is known is that pages with no external signals are less likely to be discovered and cited. There is no guarantee of citation.

In B2B, buyers ask assistants "what is the best tool for X". That makes brand mentions in third-party comparisons, reviews and industry publications valuable. See the full strategy in GEO for SaaS and B2B and the role of brand mentions without links.

Six-month plan example

Hypothetical example: a contract management SaaS for small businesses, with 1 marketing person, wants to build authority without depending only on guest posts. The goals below are illustrative.

MonthActionTarget pageLink goal
1Map competitors and gaps; review the rel of current linksAllDiagnosis
2Publish the free "service agreement" templateThe template page2 to 3
3Close two integrations with e-signature and accounting systemsIntegration pages2
4Customer survey (contract habits)The research page3 to 5
5Digital PR with the survey in business publicationsResearch, home page2 to 4
6Guest posts on two legal and accounting sites, plus a comparison pageThe comparison2

The result is not guaranteed. With the right measurement method, you will know which actions brought sign-ups and which only brought vanity.

Bought links can speed up pages that already deserve to rank, such as a comparison or a finished tool, but they do not replace the assets above. At Contentor, the backlink service delivers permanent, contextual links on Brazilian DR 20+ sites, at $49 per link in the standard niche, with 6-month replacement. You choose the page and the anchor, but not the site. Because the sites are in Portuguese, this fits SaaS products that serve Brazilian or Portuguese-speaking buyers.

Because they are paid, Google asks that these links be qualified with rel="sponsored", and the decision to buy should weigh the risk. Evaluate with the criteria in buying backlinks safely. In B2B, choose tool or research pages over pricing pages, and measure the result in sign-ups, using key events in GA4.

Frequently asked questions

Are guest posts still worth it for SaaS?

They are when the site publishes for your buyer and the article has something useful to say. They lose value when they become volume on generic blogs. Use guest posts to complement your own assets and prioritize sites in your industry, even if they have less traffic. Relevance weighs more than size.

The one that most deserves to be cited: a tool, a template, a study or the integration page. These pages attract links more naturally than the pricing page. Then use internal links to carry the authority to the product and pricing pages, which are the conversion pages.

They help, but not always for ranking. Many use nofollow or sponsored, and the value lies in qualified traffic, discovery and reputation. Check the rel attribute of each one and measure the visits and sign-ups that come from them separately.

It is not recommended. Google's spam policies cite requiring a link in a contract or terms of use, without giving the content owner the choice to qualify it, as link spam. Ask for it as an option and, if the link comes from a badge, use nofollow or sponsored.

It depends on the competition for the search you want to contest. Compare the domains linking to the top results with your current profile. There is no magic number, and promises of a position are a warning sign. The guide on how many backlinks you need shows how to estimate.

Next step

Choose an asset your team can deliver in 30 days, such as a template or a small survey, and list 10 sites in your industry that could cite it. Then read digital PR and link building to take the asset to trade press. When you need predictable volume on pages that are already ready, compare the options in how to buy high-quality backlinks.
